On Writing

Hello and welcome to my blog! I was a writer before the internet. Yes, way back in grade school. I wrote for the school newsletter. One of my first articles was the history of Valentine’s Day. I typed it up on the school typewriter, in my spare time.

At 16, I actually had an internship with a local newspaper, and learned typesetting, and mock-ups, and why word counts and headlines are so important. I learned interview techniques and even wrote a frontpage article. I read the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings, like, at least three times. I loved reading and started a book, collecting quotes from famous authors like Benjamin Franklin, jotting down poetry and short stories, submitting book reviews and articles to newspapers.

It was not until 1985 or later, when I got my first PC. My first personal computer was a Commodore 64. And only a few years later, people went from posting digital ads on digital Bulletin Boards to blogs and vlogs. Wow did they take off! Everyone has something to say!

I always intended to write a whole book or maybe two, but I never did. I went from stay-at-home mom, to working mom, then single working mom. But now, with all the tools and opportunities available nowadays, I’ve decided to try again.

The world wide web is a unifying network. It’s not just data, it’s people. On the other end of these computer screens is the global village. I wanted to finally raise my hand and wave and say hello! I’m glad you’re here. And, I hope you’re having a great day!

I’ve been sitting in the bleachers, watching the whole show for a while. It’s been interesting, and maybe inspiring. I have not been much of a blogger, but I decided to say something, starting today. Maybe participate a little.

I hope you are participating in your village, in your world, and in the internet community, in a good way. Doing good things. Thinking good thoughts! Good vibes, a Positive Attitude, and a good word, can work wonders.

So please, if you ever wonder what it was like before computers, just ask. What would we do without them? Don’t ask me that one! The past has many wonderful memories, but it’s not perfect back there. We may want to go back, but we wouldn’t want to for very long, I think. However wonderful it might be to have a time machine, that technology is still in the future!

They say people don’t like change, but then what is boredom, if not a need for a change? Some changes have actually been good – indoor plumbing is my favorite, along with indoor heating and air conditioning! Lights, on demand! Dishwashers! These things represent progress, which is no longer a bad word.

Every once in a while I find myself asking, “But what if . . .?” And with all the plethora of information, I notice a neglected topic and wonder, “Why isn’t anyone talking about this?” Exploring, asking and answering – that is the fun of writing. I want to do more of that here.

Meanwhile, if you have a topic you believe is important to write about, especially if no one else is talking about it, please let me know. This site is just a beginning for what I hope will be a lot of good conversations, encouragement and inspiration for every visitor.

Thanks for stopping by, and I look forward to seeing you here again soon!
